Design thinking: improving the efficiency of communicating on OSH
Agnieszka Szczygielska

Internal communication on occupational safety and health (OSH) in an enterprise should focus on employees. It should be effective, well thought out, consistent; it should not involve too much time or too many resources. Therefore, professionals involved in communicating information on OSH to employees keep looking for ways to improve the efficiency of this process. This article presents the principles of design thinking and possible ways of using it to improve the efficiency of communicating on OSH.

Conflicts at work – their origins and possible solutions
Martyna Ostrowska

Conflicts at work are a natural phenomenon and occur even in the best of teams. Proper identification of the background of a conflict and selection of appropriate ways to solve it are key factors. New practical tool for assessing hazards in a diverse thermal environment
Anna Marszałek

A comprehensive method for assessing hazards in a thermal environment has been developed at CIOP-PIB. It is based on European standards. Its advantage consists in making it possible to evaluate different types of thermal environments (cold, hot, mixed), differently than required by standards, each of which covers one specific type of thermal environment only. This article presents general principles of using this method and a related web app, which is available at CIOP-PIB’s website. It also discusses a way of verifying this method with the participation of workers at cold and hot workstations.

Testing psychophysical capabilities with particular emphasis on influence of age
Danuta Roman-Liu

With the increasing age of workers, the workforce's psychophysical characteristics like strength, joint angle range, visual-motor coordination, and body balance are increasingly important for the work performance.

The article characterizes parameters describing the psychophysical abilities of employees and procedures of measuring these parameters. Due to the fact that their values change over time, they may be the basis for guidelines for designing work places for older workers.

Types and purposes of emergency lighting
Andrzej Pawlak

This article outlines the requirements for using emergency lighting systems in accordance with current legislation, including the provisions of standard EN 1838 revised on November 25, 2013. It explains unclear provisions regarding emergency lighting, and discusses discrepancies between the requirements in various legal documents. This article classifies emergency lighting and presents objectives, requirements and sample use of individual types of emergency escape lighting: escape route lighting, open area (anti-panic) lighting and high risk task area lighting. It also discusses general rules for placing emergency escape lighting fittings.
