Abstract

Development of reference materials for testing materials protecting against heat

Project manager: Grażyna Bartkowiak Ph.D. (Eng.)

Project summary:

"The main aim of the task was to develop reference materials for basic methods of testing the resistance of materials to heat:- heat transfer from radiation;- heat transfer from contact with a hot object;- heat transfer from flame;- the effect of molten metal splashes.Statistical analysis showed that the developed reference materials are characterized by repeatability of test results and the stability of their properties in time.To confirm the usefulness of the reference materials (a) acid-proof steel plates for testing resistance to heat transfer from radiation and (b) borosilicate glass plates for testing resistance to heat transfer from contact with a hot object, interlaboratory tests in selected national and foreign notified bodies were conducted. For both of the tested reference materials, there was a large scatter of measurement results between individual laboratories, which may have been caused by the differences in the way the test stands were constructed or by systematic errors made by individual laboratories."
