Abstract

Test methods and criteria for selecting respiratory protective devices against radioactive particles

Project manager: Krzysztof Makowski M.Sc.

Project summary:

"The aim of the task was to develop a methodology for selecting elements for filtering radioactive aerosols, and criteria and principles for selecting respiratory protective devices against radioactive particles. The task consisted in: - analyzing and characterizing the hazard of radioactive aerosols with constant dispersed phase at workstations, taking into special consideration radon;- discussing the health effects of radioactive aerosols and exposure to ionizing radiation;- presenting ways radioactive aerosols penetrate the body, using radon as an example;- developing the principles of a methodology for testing penetration of radioactive aerosols; - constructing a test stand;- testing penetration of radioactive aerosols;- verifying the accepted principles; - developing a methodology for testing penetration of filtering materials in relation to radioactive aerosols. The results of the tests carried out according to the developed methodology made it possible to define criteria for assessing elements of respiratory protective devices protecting against radioactive aerosols."
