Abstract

A method of estimating the risk of electrostatic discharge in work rooms

Project manager: Zygmunt Grabarczyk Ph.D. (Eng.)

Project summary:

The aim of the task was to develop a method of estimating the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD), which is required by directive ATEX USERS 89/391/EEC and the Regulation of the Minister of Economy of 8 July 2010 that implements it. To reduce the number of accidents, tools for supporting the obligatory analysis and assessment of the risk of ignition of explosive atmospheres by ESD in enterprises were developed. Meters for measuring electrostatic charge transferred during ESD were designed. Then a list of parameters of the working environment that have to be included in a check list was developed. The meter was assembled and switched on, a check list was developed. The developed check list EX-ESD covers most explosion hazards caused by static electricity, except for mines, tankers and the manufacturing of explosion materials. On the basis of German and American statistics as well as domestic data on the number of explosions in the industry, it was estimated that on average there are about 22 initiations of explosive atmospheres by ESD in Polish enterprises every year.
