Subject of the 27 th edition of the Occupational Safety Poster Competition: The Office

The modern office is a multifaceted realm. Offices can be closed or open spaces provided by employers where employees perform the entrusted tasks, usually in large teams, meeting clients or working on the phone and computer. Offices have also migrated to private spaces as the divide between professional and private life has shifted, disturbing the balance between the two. Moreover, offices often use rented, co-working spaces, located in prime city locations, where freelancers, start-ups or self-employed professionals find an inspiring, temporary work spot.

Seemingly, office work is the safest, and yet it strongly affects the quality of life and health of employees. In comfort terms, the physical conditions, such as lighting, air quality, temperature or humidity are as important as psychological factors, present in the team work environment. The mental strain induced stress, difficult interpersonal relations or conflicts at work have a negative impact upon employee health. Similarly, a prolonged sitting position causes static back and trunk muscles strains which in turn lead to musculoskeletal conditions. Lastly, professionals working from home and free from permanent employment constraints often pay the price with family conflicts and social isolation, which makes such a working system equally problematic.

The overall working conditions present in the office work environment may induce an excessive body strain, mental dexterity attenuation and many other conditions.

The modern office thus could be compared to a mirror which reflects all contemporary work environment changes, equally those that foster the human development and those that pose a threat to it.
