Evaluation of operating theatre nurses’ knowledge on radiological protection – original research results
Klaudia Antkowiak, Danuta Kunecka

A nursing job is closely associated with a risk of being exposed to a number of detrimental factors. Every workplace can possess its own distinguishing features, which result in a specific kind of professional exposure. An operating theatre is a highly technical place, where an irradiation constitutes one of the risks. Fluoroscopy is used in a greater number of surgeries, caused mainly by dynamics of technological development, bringing not only benefits, but also an extraordinary risk of medical staff being exposed to radiation. Therefore examination of nursing staff knowledge of a certain operating theatre on ionizing radiation and principles of a radiation protection has become the research objective. A diagnostic survey was used as a method of analysis, in which an originally created questionnaire was applied as an expertise tool. 45 nurses employed at an operating theatre embraced by the study participated in the survey. Obtained results indicate that the knowledge possessed by the nursing personnel on radiological protection is on an average level. Moreover, there is a trend indicating that a greater time spent by a person at an operating theatre not only increases the amount of knowledge on a radiation protection, but most importantly, it increases staff’s compliance to common principles of radiation protection, practical implementation and adherence to individual means of an employee protection.

Bernadeta Jędrzejkiewicz, Barbara Ślusarska

Work bears special value and therefore, it is under protection from the Polish law. Nurses can acquire qualifications necessary to perform the tasks of the occupational medicine by way of postgraduate education, namely, by completing a qualification or specialization training course. Obtaining the necessary competences lets them complete objectives such as occupational health protection against the harmful effects of working environment conditions, occupational prophylaxis and health monitoring.

Evaluation of forearm and wrist posture in a dental hygienist's occupational activities
Waldemar Ćwirzeń, Leopold Wagner

The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of exposure of 210 dental hygienists to forearms and wrists overloading. The study was based on a Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) questionnaire. The results showed that 42.4% and 43.35% of respondents adopted a strenuous working posture of the right and left forearm, respectively. Strenuous inclination of the right and left wrist was reported by 37.1% and 43.8% of respondents, respectively. Additional twisting and lateral deviation of wrists was reported by 83.8% and 84.3% of respondents for the right and left wrist respectively. The results confirm the premise that dental hygienists are at a high risk of overloading their forearms and wrists. Therefore, there is an urgent need to implement preventive measures and to carry out periodic check-ups.

Working, but poor. Selected aspects of the working poor phenomenon in Europe – a taxonomic analysis
Katarzyna Cymbranowicz

The article addresses the problem of working people who struggle with poverty. It analyses the phenomenon of the working poor with a taxonomic analysis in which the subjective scope was limited to selected European countries (especially EU Member States and EFTA), and the time scope limited to recent years (2005-2016). The aim of this article is to present the relation between work and poverty on European labour markets, including a clarification of the level and structure of the working poor. In order to achieve this research goal, we used the results of the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions and we carried out comparable statistical analyses using information from the Eurostat database. On the basis of the results it can be concluded that the phenomenon of the working poor exists in Europe and in the future it may become more prevalent and pose a serious challenge for European labour markets.
