Magdalena Dobrzyńska

The aim of this article is to describe the situation of young people on the European labour market after the economic crisis and to outline initiatives undertaken by EU countries to promote social and labour market inclusion. Analysis of work environment in railway control centers
Jan Radosz

This article presents a study of the working conditions in 10 rooms in railway control centers. The study focused on factors that can increase the risk of an employee committing an error: noise, mechanical vibration, lighting, and workstation ergonomics. Working conditions were evaluated on the basis of current national legislation and international standards. An analysis of the results showed that both noise at workstations and room acoustics generally met the requirements of the relevant regulations, but permissible values for the impact of mechanical vibration on people in buildings were exceeded in all investigated rooms. An assessment of electrical lighting showed that reflections on control desks were the most common problem. An ergonomics assessment showed that at multi-monitor stations, monitors were positioned too high. Moreover, tables tops were too thick, hence legroom was limited, and armrests could not be adjusted, so chairs could not be pulled close to tables.

Using the faceted search engines in libraries
Agnieszka Młodzka-Stybel

Following other libraries the CIOP-PIB’s library has taken action towards implementing PRIMO information search engine in order to make the process of finding discipline data easier.

This article presents ways to help users easily find specialist information on occupational safety and health  in CIOP-PIB’s library. To that aim, a new faceted search engine has been developed, an example of an evolution in information technologies in libraries.

Using ear-muffs on shale gas drilling rigs
Izabela Warmiak

This article presents measurements of noise parameters and estimates of noise exposure for workers on shale gas drilling rigs. It also presents a practical example of selecting ear-muffs for workstations in which noise levels in the audible range have been exceeded.

Research has shown that to reduce noise exposure and to improve work comfort for an electrician, a mechanic and a tower driller assistant, it is necessary to use two kinds of ear-muffs.

Coalescing filters used in filtration of liquid aerosols
Piotr Sobiech

Liquids used in the chemical industry and in related industries may be a threat to exposed workers and they may have an adverse environmental effect; therefore, their elimination from exhaust gases is an important challenge from the point of view of work safety and environment protection. Coalescing filters, which make it possible to remove the liquid phase  by combining and draining droplets, play an important role in removing those impurities. Researchers around the world are working on new structures and on increasing their possible applications. This review paper presents information on the operating principles of coalescing filters (especially in aerosol filtration), factors influencing their efficiency and application areas.
