A new method of active noise reduction in hearing protectors

Hearing protectors are the most common solutions for reducing noise exposure at workstations. Commonly used passive hearing protectors, like most passive solutions, are characterized by low attenuation in the low frequencies. That is why workers are not always properly protected against low-frequency noise. Additionally, non-uniform attenuation of passive hearing protectors in that frequency band has an adverse impact on speech intelligibility. Active noise reduction (ANR) systems, which are more effective in reducing low-frequency noise, are a solution. Using ANR systems in hearing protectors requires control algorithms to ensure those systems are stable and, at the same time, provide highly effective active noise reduction. An ANR system controlled by NOTCH filters is an example of a solution that meets these criteria.



Work-related traumatic brain injuries

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is regarded a major cause of mortality in Western Europe and the USA. There is need for novel, more efficient therapeutic methods. This paper presents an overview of current knowledge on work-related traumatic brain injuries. It show the need to evaluate the incidence of work-related traumatic brain injuries, risk factors, ways of prevention, and long-term outcomes.



Coal dust – a problem overkill or a real threat?

The threat of coal dust explosion is present not only in mines but in the energy production sector as well, where coal is used to produce energy. The feasibility of such a problem comes to light mainly due to the human activity and state of mind, on which not only the whole production process is based, but also a working OSH management. Knowledge about both threat sources and techniques of their elimination or prevention, which this article discusses, lets us create an effective safety system, which applies to each and every employee, depending on their role in the company. There is no place for ignorance when it comes to threat such as coal dust explosion. Steady investment in developing employees' awareness as well as other parts of the OSH system, presented in this article, is a good practice rather than redundant cost, which we should keep in mind. Following basic safety guidelines lets us manage the risk of  sedentary dust, and, therefore, prevents coincidence from affecting production, which should never be the case in the energy production sector.



The role of professional competence on the contemporary labour market

Socio-economic changes, and progress of both civilization and science and technology contribute to the economic development of countries. People and their competencies are always a major factor in development and progress. The employees' level of competence affects their incentive to work and job satisfaction. It is also related to the quality of their work. Today, occupational competence is understood not only as the knowledge and skills required to work in a specific occupation or at a specific workstation, but also as individuals' ability to cope in a variety of occupational and personal situations. This article discusses the role of core competencies, or abilities with a high degree of universality, which can be used in different situations. The role of those competencies is discussed using experts in ​​ergonomics and occupational safety and health as an example.
