Martyna Ostrowska, Aneta Michcik

Prevention of zoonotic diseases other than tick-borne
Jacek Dutkiewicz, Angelina Wójcik-Fatla, Violetta Zając, Jacek Sroka, Ewa Cisak

In Poland, there are at least 31 important pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths) causing occupational zoonotic diseases other than tick-borne. Of that number, 9 are transmitted mainly by airborne route, 9 by alimentary route and 13 by direct contact through the skin and/or mucous membranes. The main directions in preventing zoonoses include keeping animal rooms clean and conducting periodic disinfections, using protective clothing and equipment, medical prophylaxis, eradicating endangered flocks, combating rodents, vaccinating humans and animals, taking precautions at parturitions of ruminants, maintaining hygiene at food and water consumption, and health education.

Defeating protective devices and guards in machinery – the extent of the phenomenon (1)
Marek Dźwiarek

Using protective devices and guards in machinery is an obligation resulting  not only from  regulations but also from a kind of moral dictate, since those devices and guards should protect machine operators against risks. Defeating protective devices consists in introducing changes into the design of machines, following which  they do not protect employees any more. CIOP-PIB's studies showed that protective devices were defeated in practically every factory. The first part of this article presents results of an analysis of accidents caused by defeated protective devices; it also analyses the extent of this phenomenon on the basis of study visits and questionnaires. The analyses showed that  over 20% of  accidents related to machine operation resulted from defeated protective devices. Those accidents were usually serious or fatal. Moreover, study visits and questionnaires showed that defeating protective systems was common. The next part of this article will suggest a method of preventing this phenomenon.
