Abstract

Implementing a method and constructing a stand for determining resistance of gloves and protective clothing to cutting by sharp objects

Project manager: Agnieszka Stefko M.Sc. (Eng.)

Contractor: Emilia Irzmańska Ph.D. (Eng.)

Project summary:

The task consisted in constructing equipment for determining resistance to cutting by sharp objects in accordance with the principles of the PN-EN ISO 13997:2003 standard. A way of conducting tests and assessing results that consider the guidelines in this standard was also developed. The operation of the constructed test stand was checked, the uncertainty of measurements was established, a verified testing procedure for conducting laboratory tests was developed, the levels of effectiveness were compared regarding resistance to cutting established on the basis of the comparative tests with the use of the constructed stand and a test stand that complies with the PN-EN 388:2006 standard that is used in the Department of Personal Protective Equipment of CIOP-PIB. The test results confirmed that the test stands operated properly and made it possible to conduct tests in accordance with the standard. The test results of 12 fabrics for protective clothing and gloves were also used in developing instructions for estimating the uncertainty of measurements. The NOR-40 testing procedure was also verified. Then resistance to cutting was tested according to standard PN-EN 388:2006 on the 12 fabrics for protective clothing and gloves that had been tested for resistance to cutting according to standard PN-EN ISO 13997:2003. In accordance to the guidelines of both standards, the levels of effectiveness of resistance to cutting according to PN-EN ISO 13997:2003 were suggested. A guidebook for manufacturers of gloves and protective clothing on selecting materials and construction that ensures resistance to cutting by sharp objects was developed.
