Abstract

Investigating the influence of welding shields in the aspect of welders' visual functions disorders

Project manager: Grzegorz Owczarek Ph.D. (Eng.)

Project summary:

Currently manufactured eye protectors do not meet welders' expectations at many welding work stations. This is so because they do not protect against phenomena related to welding work that are harmful to vision.Measurements of the intensity of welding radiation were conducted close to welding shields. They concerned the range of radiation defined as radiation responsible for cataracts. A new shield was constructed: it fills the gap in the assortment of welding protectors very well and it can be used when welding is done in special conditions.Welders had medical tests, too. An analysis of the results of those tests and a questionnaire survey made it possible to develop a draft of a new ophthalmology chart for welders. Schimer's test, which makes it possible to assess the stability of the tear layer, is a very important element that was added to the tests welders undergo.Numerous educational actions were carried out: training courses in occupational safety were conducted for welders.
