Abstract

Support system for upper limbs rehabilitation using the virtual reality technique.

Project manager: Paweł Budziszewski M.Sc. (Eng.)

Project summary:

The aim of the project was to develop a system based on virtual reality techniques supporting the rehabilitation of patients with upper limb dysfunction. In order to design system, the following assumptions were taken into consideration:
- Cost of the system should be low as possible so that it could be widely used;
- The system can be used both in hospital, rehabilitation center and at patient`s home;
- Rehabilitation program should have an attractive form of a computer game which would motivate the patient to exercise;
- system should allow supervision of the rehabilitation progress performed by a physiotherapist if connected to Internet;
- The system should enable an individual development of rehabilitation programs depending on patient`s needs.
To test the system, three rehabilitation games focusing on three types of rehabilitation exercises were developed and they focused on: movements in the shoulder joint (global limb movement), movements of pronation / supination of the forearm, precise movements of the limbs with regard to wrist movements. Result of carried out tests is a positive evaluation of the developed system and exemplary games.
